Integrated chips were first started as an experiment in the AT&T Bell Laboratories in the summer of 1950s. The idea of integrated chips was first started by a young German who was declined leave for the summer. He wanted to prove a point to his supervisors and started off to work vociferously on a technology which he thought would be a path breaking one and wanted to move in a direction which none on the planet had even thought about- integrating millions of transistors on a single piece of wafer. He started off with this idea by integrating 50 transistors on a piece of plastic glass which was later developed into a silicon IC. From then on, there has never been a turning back in the IC technologies.
